Weekend

(This photograph was taken at a previous exhibit.)

Friday night was the reception for the new photographs we hung in the Long View Gallery. The theme was renewal. You know how when you go grocery shopping and you're thirsty you buy a lot of drinks? And when you're hungry you buy more food than you would normally? I must be tired because three of the photographs I chose to hang were of sleeping people.

Saturday was the day I began the physical dismantling of my father's house. I brought back four or five pieces of furniture and boxes and boxes of photographs, Bibles, news articles, scrapbooks, etc. Last night, this is what my dining room looked like:

I had to get rid of a piece of furniture to bring one back. And in order to accomodate the large amount of archival materials, I had to clean out some cabinets. I got rid of bootleg tapes and old clothes and reorganized spaces to make room. The furniture looks beautiful in the new places, and I feel so happy about my choices.

It was a very emotional couple of days, made all the more so by the death of a very dear friend. In honor of her, I'm ending this post with a poem by e. e. cummings that was part of the gallery exhibit:

I Thank You

i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any--lifted from the no
of all nothing--human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

Plans

Last night my plan for today was to go to the Nasher in Durham and see the photography exhibit, then go to Through This Lens and talk to the owner and look around. Instead this is what I did:

Three loads of laundry
Grocery shopping (x2 because I forgot some things the first time)
Went to see a friend whose husband died a month ago.
Cooked soup for my dad and another friend.
Cooked five pounds of shrimp (some for the soup and some for dinner).
Assembled 80 cards for my aunt and my sister-in-law.
Had a lengthy and somewhat contentious discussion with my husband about the division of chores at our house.

The discussion ended in a stalemate. But the rest of the day was productive. This kind of busyness brings a real sense of accomplishment, and a feeling of doing good for others. Not what I planned, but I know I'm going to make some people very happy tomorrow.

The world calls Audrey

I know just how Audrey feels, sitting at the window looking longingly outside. I'm at my office now, and thinking ahead to the weekend. Just as the cat sees bees, birds, butterflies, flies, and lizards, I feel excited about the things that are calling out for my time.

If you're free tonight, head over to the LongView Center in downtown Raleigh and catch the Triangle Gay Men's Chorus performance. It is called Threads of Hope, featuring "Brave Souls & Dreamers" and includes Special Guests, The Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte.

Come on, Friday night! I can't wait.

Itchy Scratchy

Our little garden is still doing great with all the rain and the unbelievably nice weather we've had since we planted it. That big squash has been laying low under some leaves, hoping to hang on until the bitter end, but we found it yesterday. We picked over a quart of blackberries and I made two blackberry pies.

I'm trying to figure out aperture and shutter speed for my photography class, and worked with my camera quite a bit. I still don't know what I'm doing. My brother says it's the kind of thing that takes a lifetime to get down. I'm impatient.

New Year, Day 2

All day I have seen people running, walking, biking. "New Year's Resolution, Day 2" is what I've thought each time.

It's probably pretty easy to keep a new exercise regime while on vacation, as most of these people are. I'm wondering how far they will get into a year where work, children, housecleaning, meetings, etc etc take priority. I'm pulling for them, though, and know the value of keeping a commitment to oneself.

I, on the other hand, made no resolutions, so I contented myself with photographing the flora and fauna of Bald Head.

I also took a three-hour nap. Maybe I should resolve...no, never mind.

A weekend in pictures

My husband's band played Friday night, and our plan was to get up Saturday and go to Bald Head. It was very cold and windy, not ideal riding the ferry weather.

But it was sunny and cozy inside.

Two of us in particular were happy to hang around the house:

We had dinner with friends last night, and today I am reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist, doing laundry, and putting off going to the gym.

An excellent weekend.
